1. A social service is a service that is free. 2. Everyone can benefit from these social services depending on their needs 3. In Quebec these include : Health services, as well as social services and financial help.

Seniors Homeless People with severe illness/disease

They are sick and require health care. They are vulnerable (Seniors) and require health care more than the rest of the population. Homeless people can’t eat/sleep/and be safe like everyone else unless they have access to services like shelters.

Why would seniors have difficulty accessing social services? ANS: In some cases they can’t walk or drive to their appointment. They don’t have a lot of money to pay for treatments/medication. Why would Homeless have difficulty accessing social services? ANS: Many don’t access these services for multiple reasons: Lack of transportation, not enough money for medication/treatment, opening hours/ number of places available (ex: Shelters) Why would sick/ill people have difficulty accessing social services? ANS: They require a treatment that is not available in Canada, They need a quick intervention that can only be done in the private system( Money issue ), They have difficulty paying for their medication/treatment.

Social factors Family (kicked out/ domestic violence) Addictions Physical/Mental health condition Lack of affordable housing Location (ex: Montreal) 2.Economic factors Job access welfare access Ability to pay for medication/housing/food Government decisions (Ability to pay for daycare, for private health care, for insurance etc.)

Anybody can ! 1. Women : They generally earn less than men, they are more vulnerable. 2. Seniors : fixed incomes (don’t work = don’t have extra money to pay for medication/housing/food/ increasing taxes and rents etc. ) 3. Newcomers: Immigrants & refugees have to rent an apartment they can’t afford. 4. The working poor: Single parents with young children who can’t afford day care, housing, clothing, and food for the family.

In Montreal : 25, 000- 30,000 people are homeless 200, 000 people experience homelessness in a given year! 14, 400 stay in emergency shelters 7530 women stay in “violence against women shelters”
