2. Three types of passages Literary –(Fiction) Focus on character, plot, setting, imagery, point of view, and figurative language. Follow characters and events. Informational-(Nonfiction) Articles/passages that are factual with some opinion. Ex. Interesting technological innovations, scientific discoveries, and historical events/biographies. Pay attention to names, dates, events, and key vocabulary. Persuasive/Argumentative –(Nonfiction) Article/passages that takes a position. Opinion heavy with factual statements.

3. Literature Genres There are three literary genres Poetry – the most musical and least structured form Drama – Extremely structured Serious drama and tragedy, comic drama, melodrama(Plays, Screenplays, Teleplays) Prose – Everything else Fiction – imaginary characters and events(novels and short stories) Nonfiction – Real people, places, object, or events. (biography, autobiography, letters, essays, reports/articles)

4. Different Measurements Vocabulary – All three. Context clues, Reading comprehension Reading Application – All three. Main Idea, Sequence, Cause and Effect, Compare/Contrast, Fact/Opinion, Inference Literary Analysis – Literary passages. Character, plot, setting, conflict, Point of view, and theme.

5. Short and Extended responses * Both – Always re-state question in the answer. This doesn’t mean repeat; it means re-state. EXAMPLE – What’s your favorite color? INCORRECT – Blue. OR What’s your favorite color? CORRECT – My favorite color is blue. *Answer in complete sentences. * Establish author and title in first line. Ex. In the article ________ by ___________, * Short response – 3 to 5 sentences. 2 to 3 support sentences. *Extended response – 5 to 7 sentences. 4 to 5 supports sentences *Support sentences are either paraphrased references or direct quotes that relate to your answer. For support use: For example, For instance, An example of, According to, ----- * Wrap-up thought.
