SMART Board can be simply described as an interactive whiteboard. It was first released in 1991 by SMART Technologies as an interactive tool for teachers to use within the classroom. With the use of both a computer and a projector images, text, and lesson plans can be transferred onto the display board.

SMART Boards have effectively replaced the standard overhead projector. Since its first release there have been many models, the most recent of which have both multi-touch and multi-write features. This allows for multiple students to participate in lessons at the same time. SMART Boards have also become invaluable resources for teachers.

Today there are more than 40 million students and teachers in 175 different countries that use SMART technology. SMART Boards have been a great innovation in the intertwined worlds of teaching and technology. Jaclyn Gallego

What online tools offer... Homework assignments Virtual Textbooks Assessments Tutorials Practice Problems

The Pros Flexibility The ability to access tasks from any computer connected to the internet Teachers can offer a time frame for which students can complete their tasks at their own convenience Automatic feedback Upon completing tasks students receive their scores right away and (depending on instructor) can view incorrect problems Saves time and paper No need for grading numerous papers when the online tool does it for you Keeps kids engaged in learning Kids are all about technology these days…

The Cons Dependent upon internet connection Completion of tasks requires internet connection A poor connection leads to problems accessing or completing tasks Costly Requires regular access to a computer Most programs charge a fee to utilize No control over cheating Assessments via the internet unintentionally allows students to refer to their books, notes, internet or fellow classmates
