To protect your eyes To measure temperature. Usually have both Fahrenheit and Celsius scales.

To help you see things that are far away, such as stars and planets Make far-away objects appear larger, so you can see more detail

Doesn’t enlarge things as much as a microscope does, but it is easier to carry. Uses several lenses to make objects appear much larger, so you can see more detail

Can be used to measure mass To measure length and distance

Can be used to test if an object is made of certain materials such as iron Can be used to measure volume, or the amount of space an object takes up

Can be used to figure out amounts quickly Used in many ways by scientists, especially for collecting, recording, and analyzing data

Talk into it to record information you want to remember and play back later Used for measuring time

Used by scientists who study living things to collect them without hurting them. Pictures are taken to record what something looks like and can be used later to compare to other pictures of the object to show how something has changed.

1. What tools could you use to help you remember details of science activities? __________________________________ 2. What tool would you use to measure the mass of a soil sample? ______________________________________ 3. What tool would you use if you wanted to observe craters on the Moon? ______________________________________ 4.
