L2 Chem Lab 8A (pg 104-5) Formula of a Hydrated Salt Honors, skip to frame 10 for instructions. Performance Date: 1/29/2015 Due Date: Wed., 2/4/2015

Lab 8A on Page104 PreLab – due Thursday, 1/29/2015 Page 1 I Purpose II Materials: CuSO4. 5H20, dessicator, Lab Master w/ powercord, adapter, stir stick, beaker w/chemical, spatula, and heater, balance (you have to share – DO NOT get these wet). Weighing papers are in paper clip well. III Diagram: See set up on counters

Page 2: IV Safety and Cleanup: Safety:You must wear goggles, aprons Keep balance from water Use weighing paper to mass your chemical DO NOT PUT CHEMICAL DIRECTLY ON SCALE – USE A WEIGHING PAPER!! STIR hydrate regularly while heating Cleanup:Use sponge to wipe counters Rinse off dessicator. V Procedure Part 1 on page 104 gives you directions Page 3: VI Data: Draw data tables shown on page 105 neatly with ruler

Equipment usage & more procedures pg 297 in lab book for heater directions To weigh Copper (II) Sulfate Pentahydrate place clean weighing paper on scale and zero out. Slowly measure out approximately 4.0 g of chemical using scooplua and pour into already weighed dessicator. To put dessicator into heater, slide out blue collar with thumb so dessicator will fit into the heater then slide collar back into original position to tighten the orange ring.

Recording data/calculations p. 105 As you perform the lab, record data in your pre-drawn table 1 (page 105). Below Table 2, show calculations for Part 2 and Part 3 in order given.

Appendix D in lab book (starting on page 297) shows how to use Lab Master WHEN YOU ARE DONE COLLECTING DATA: Turn off lab master and scale Rinse out dessicator and invert on paper towel to drain. Run plenty of water to get sulfate out of the sink. Wipe up any spills on your counter or equipment with a sponge Dirty station or sink means your group loses points.

Final report: PreLabPut your name in top right corner of top sheet. Put lab # and lab title on top line) Page 3 VI Data - Recorded data in tables 1 and 2 VII Graph - none VIII Calculations Part 2 Data Analysis Part 3 Error Analysis Draw Table 2 (neatly with ruler) and complete. LAST PAGE:IX Discussion - none X Conclusion

Page 2, Part 2, Data Analysis a.Mass of hydrate: 4.10g b.Mass of water: 1.2g c.Formula mass of water: 2(1.008) + 15.999= 18.018g d.1.2g x 1mol = ___________ mol 18.018g e.Formula mass CuSO 4 is 63.55+32.06+4(15.999) = f. (dessicator+dried salt) – dessicator = ___g. ____g x 1mol = ___ mol ans.e. g.x = ans. d = ___mol water or # of water molecules in formula ans. f h. Write your formula for the hydrate.

Part 3, Error Analysis b. Smallest division is 0.01 g. This is e. c. Mass msrd., mass (g) Estimated error, e (g) M-e (g) M+e (g) Mass of hydrated CuSO4 Mass of dehydrated CuSO4 X. Conclusion:

Honors - Period 5 Writeup Page 1 – I Intro, II Materials/Equipment, III Diagram, IV Safety, V Procedure (pg 104) Complete handout NEATLY and turn it in with above information.*** Due on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 IV Safety and Cleanup: Safety:You must wear goggles, aprons Keep balance from water Use weighing paper to mass your chemical DO NOT PUT CHEMICAL DIRECTLY ON SCALE – USE A WEIGHING PAPER!! STIR hydrate regularly while heating Cleanup:Use sponge to wipe counters Rinse off dessicator. ***You will need to complete your handout (Finding the Formula of a Hydrate Data Sheet). If your work is unreadable, you will lose points.
