3 March, 2010 Six schools were identified as Persistently Low Achieving Century High School, Santa Ana High School, Saddleback High School, Valley High School, Willard Intermediate School, and Sierra Intermediate School Numerous student, parent and staff forums were held Data was collected in these forums in the following areas: –Organization –Parent and Community Partnerships –Leadership and Staffing –Curriculum and Instruction –Environment and School Culture Principals and Cabinet Members met weekly to collaborate Site Instructional Leadership Teams were formed with the support of SAEA Two and one half buy back days in June were used as staff development and collaboration in developing the plan Spring 2010

Summer Work All certificated and classified staff at each school were asked to participate in committees and provide input on the transformational plan at their site Committees and the newly formed Instructional Leadership Teams met regularly Principals and Cabinet members continued to meet weekly to continue the collaboration and assist with support Well attended Parent Meetings were held at each site Staff Development was provided prior to the opening of school 4

5 Commonalities of the Plans Organization Site Instructional Leadership Teams will continue to meet throughout the year to ensure the plans are being implemented Development of a teacher compact which addresses the commitments to which all teachers agree All sites voted on agreed upon transformational plans and teacher compacts

6 Commonalities of the P lans Parent/Community Partnerships Regularly scheduled parent meetings (formal and informal) to strengthen communication and connection to the school and resources Commitment from staff to provide timely feedback on individual student progress through phone and written contacts Establishment of site parent centers to provide parent education with support of the District Parent Coordinator

7 Commonalities of the Plans Leadership Staff Full-time Outreach and/or Social Service Specialist (CL) to provide student and parent Support Literacy Coaches providing support and staff development on effective instructional strategies, curriculum and lesson development Expand the use of Student Tutors/Mentors to provide support to students Teacher leadership training and coaching

8 Commonalities of the Plans Curriculum & Instruction Focused and consistent use of effective instructional strategies including use of Thinking Maps and expanded use of Technology Use of targeted assessments to collect data which will be used by teachers and departments to develop plans for effective instruction On-going teacher collaboration meetings are scheduled throughout the year

9 Commonalities of the Plans Environment/School Culture Focusing on safety and positive student behavior through Safe and Civil Schools or PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Services) More developed student incentive and recognition which provides “positive connections” to school Establishment of extended learning through interventions and tutoring and extended library time

10 Commonalities of the Plans Site Distinction Sierra Intermediate School “Sierra Preparatory Academy” - Visual and Performing Arts Willard Intermediate School – STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Santa Ana High School – Visual and Performing Arts Century High School – Academic Academies and Technology Saddleback High School – College Majors Valley High School – High School Inc.

11 Next Steps Submission of site approved plans to SAUSD Board of Education for approval Submission of plans to the State Implementing, collaborating and monitoring of site plans
