CREATING A MATHEMATICS CULTURE NZAMT CONFERENCE 13 OCT 1 2013 JIM HOGAN TEAM SOLUTIONS

GOAL DU JOUR In a school mathematics teachers are responsible for making mathematics common place, enjoyable and accessible. Today “think outside the square” a bit, reflect and ponder about how to promote mathematics in your school. to develop a project or promotion idea. Ideas Think Tank! What do you imagine?

THINKING ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL 1.Would I see mathematics in the playground? 2.Are you asked about mathematics? 3.Is there a mathematics quiz? 4.Do students like maths? Answers?

OUTSIDE IDEAS A student only spends about 120 hrs in your classroom every year. Most time is out of the classroom, in the community

OUTSIDE IDEAS Alfriston has GPS co-odinates on the rooms. 10m lines, 1 m squares, angles and a 3 Tonne rock in the grounds. A deliberate push has been made to promote location, measurement and geometry. Brilliant. The mult grid is useful but a hundreds board is probably more useful. List 5 activities to do with a large hundreds board.

OUTSIDE IDEAS There are running mazes and puzzle mazes. This is the famous Hampton Court. Drawn on concrete it is just as much fun to complete as getting lost when you are there. Keep it singularly connected!

OUTSIDE IDEAS Whisper dishes cause questions.

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM Do you have -a problem corner? -a reading corner? -a thinking seat? -a construction table? -a messy glue place, sink bench? -some physics stuff -two or three computers

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM Student work Concepts

DRAW A MATHEMATICS TEACHER This is a wonderful activity that has little direction and lots of creative potential. And add some characteristics that a mathematics teacher needs… - Robust relationships, deep mathematical knowledge, management skills, eyes in the back of the head, endless energy, wine, a range of mathematically flavored clothing, blocks, tools, memory, answer to every problem in the world, instant recall of nonsense, Google powered search engine, ability to have 6 conversations at once, be empatheic after having items stolen, can flip from Y7 number to Yr 13 a+ib to Year 11 inference without crashing, can run with a cup of tea, can referee rugby and netball, can see around corners, ability to plan a complete day and then toss it out at 8:41am due to unforeseen circumstance, can read write and spell, can …

IF MATHS WERE A FOOD? If maths was a food what would it be? This could be a wall display. If maths was -A sport -An animal -A game -A place -A journey -…

DESIGN A MATHEMATICS T-SHIRT Create a mathematics design on the T-Shirt. Best design hint….KISS! Make a wall display and print the best.

AT MANAGEMENT LEVEL 1.Who teaches mathematics? 2.Who teaches the lower ability kids? 3.Is mathematics expected at all levels? 4.Is mathematical progression monitored? IN your school?

BIG IDEAS IN MATHEMATICS What do you think is the most fundamental idea in mathematics? What is the most fundamental idea in statistics? List a few things you were never taught. Hmmmm… Π 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, … Me, myself and i?

MY FIVE BIG IDEAS IN MATHEMATICS 1.One can be anything I choose 1 to be. 2.When I combine or compare things in mathematics I do so using the same size bits. 3.The middle number is very important in all strands 4.A visual model is the most powerful 5.It is better to solve one problem 5 ways than five problems 1 way. 6.Resonance is a big idea in Physics 7.SHAPE is a big idea across all strands. 8.Change is important.

TIME TO GO…MAKE A GOAL Have a think about everything and make a goal (an inquiry) of something to attempt. This could be part of your appraisal/registration requirements. And tell me about what happened.

THANK YOU All resources at http://schools.reap.org.nz/advisor/ Email jim.hogan@cleear.net.nz Just Googkle “jim hogan nz” Tell me what happens! Send a pic. Juggling builds the Brain
