Monday, June 10 Objective: Students will be able to calculate pH and pOH of solutions. Bell Ringer: Write the equation for the ionization of water. (In other words: What two ions does water break up into?) (Fill in the balanced chemical equation below.) H 2 O  _____ + _____ (acid) (base) REVIEW

CHAMPS for June 10, 2013 C – Conversation – Notes = No Talking H – Help – RAISE HAND for questions A – Activity – Cornell Notes: Calculating pH and pOH M – Materials and Movement – Pen/Pencil, Chem Notebook, Calculator P – Participation – Complete your notes to be able to answer Practice Problems. S – Success – Complete Practice Problems to prepare for next week’s exam!

Date: 6/10/13 Topic: Calculating pH and pOH pH = Potential Hydrogen Measures amount of H + ions in a solution to determine how acidic or basic a solution is Can’t directly measure pH of basic solutions What is pH?

Date: 6/10/13 Topic: Calculating pH and pOH When calculating pH, we use the log function Log is a function that turns really big or really small numbers into integers (numbers) between 1-10 Ex: Scales the size of the galaxy into size of Harlan What is a log function?

Date: 6/10/13 Topic: Calculating pH and pOH pH = -log [H + ] EXAMPLE: What is the pH of 0.045M HBr? [HBr] = [H + ] = [0.045M] pH = -log[0.045] pH = 1.35 How do you calculate pH for acids?

Date: 6/10/13 Topic: Calculating pH and pOH 1. Calculate pOH: pOH = -log[OH - ] 2. Then calculate pH: pH + pOH = 14 So: pH = 14 - pOH How do you calculate pH for bases?

Date: 6/10/13 Topic: Calculating pH and pOH EXAMPLE: What is the pH of 1.2x10 -3 M NaOH? [NaOH] = [OH - ] = 1.2x10 -3 M pOH = -log[1.2x10 -3 ] pOH = 2.92 pH = 14 - 2.92 pH = 11.1 How do you calculate pH for bases?
