or enter specific coordinates 2. Spatial Search (use cursor to define area of interest) Mercury Searching 3. Temporal Search 1. Fielded Search (using picklists for Project, Site PI, Parameter, etc.)
21
Web Browse Tree Search provides organized “pick lists” for predefined hierarchies of metadata, e.g., parameters within sensors within sites 2. Select Site 3. Select Sensor 4. Select Parameter to bring up metadata for data sets 1. Select order in which to retrieve available data set listings

MELite for Mercury ORNL Metadata Editor (OME) –on-line editor that produces formatted files containing metadata for Mercury Metadata Editor Lite (MELite) –standalone (PC platforms) editor that produces files to be uploaded to the on-line OME –developed by S2K Project (Dozie Ezigbalike), available for download from the S2K Web site

Data Concerns Availability: not all validation data are being registered in Mercury –even with NASA “6-month” Data Policy –investigators may be performing validation without registering data in Mercury for sharing –encouragement from NASA Program Managers –promote Mercury with metadata entry tools –provide Mercury status reporting tools Documentation: different formats, file organization, units of measure –distribute “Best Practices”
26
Posting MODIS Products UMt group is extracting 11x11 km cutouts for MODIS products for core and flux sites –.hdf format, integerized-sinusoidal projection –LC/LCC (MOD_12), VI (MOD13), fPAR/LAI (Mod-15), GPP (MOD-17), others? –8-day composites ORNL proposes to post cutouts –re-project to appropriate projection (UTM) to relate to field work with desired positional accuracy –re-format into an ASCII table –need agreement on common projection and process

Prepared by ORNL (Cook et al.) Best Practices include: 1. Assign Descriptive File Names 2. Use Consistent and Stable File Formats 3. Define the Parameters 4. Use Consistent Data Organization 5. Perform Basic Quality Assurance 6. Assign Descriptive Data Set Titles 7. Provide Documentation Provided this document to SAFARI 2000, EOS Land Validation, BigFoot, and LBA projects Available on-line, in booklets, Ecol. Bull. (in press) (http://www.daac.ornl.gov/DAAC/PI/bestprac.html) Best Practices for Preparing Ecological and Ground- Based Data Sets to Share and Archive
29
How can we best support validation? What are the biggest obstacles for EOS validation, what can be done to help? Should the DAAC post a selected set of 8-d MODIS products for the 11x11 cutouts for core sites? Do links to imagery at EDC that are in the Land Validation Web site need to go into Mercury? Would MELite for Mercury be used by field investigators?
