Askja, the volcano Askja is a volcano north of Vatnajökull. Askja is the Icelandic word for caldera. The name describes the volcano very well. Not considered a active volcano until it erupted in 1875. The eruption in 1875 distributed a lot of ash over east of Iceland and a lot of people moved to America in the years after the eruption. No eruptions have been documented from settlement until it erupted in 1875. Scientists have discovered that Askja consists of three calderas on top of each other.

Volcanic activity in Askja Askja and the system Askja is a part of was very active from the end of last ice age. Activity was very high until 2900 years ago. Lower activity until 1875. A few eruptions since 1875. Seismic activity has been increasing in last few years. Might be indicating that something is going to happen soon.

Astronauts Astronauts from the Apollo missions came to Iceland to exercise. 9 out of 12 people who have walked on the moon came to Iceland to exercise. Iceland is a good springboard for those who want to go to the moon. NASA thought that the landscape in Iceland was the most moonlike landscape on earth. The astronauts practiced collecting samples and developed skill in recognizing geological structures.
