Chapter #19 Using Natural Resources
2
Chapter 19.1 Notes Ecosystem all of the living and nonliving things in a certain place. (Forest) Community- (Living things) all of the animals and plants living in one area within an ecosystem. Population- one specific type of living thing. (Maple Trees)
4
Succession is the gradual repopulation of a community by different species over a period of time.
5
Changes to ecosystem by humans can be positive or negative. The deforestation of the rain forest Building Dams Bringing to the US new plants and animals
7
Chapter 19.2 Fossil fuels- are any fuels formed from the remains of ancient plant and animal life Nonrenewable resources- any resources that are used faster than they can be replaced. Estimated that gas will run out in 2045, oil 2055, coal 2295. Coal Oil Gasoline Natural gas
8
Renewable resources- any resources that can be continually replaced. Sun Wind Water Geothermal
9
Alternative Energy Sources Solar Windmills Water in Dams Nuclear Energy Geothermal energy- the energy drawn from heated water within Earth’s crust.
10
Chapter 19.3 Notes Pollution- the contamination of the air, water, or soil (land). Global warming- an increase in earth’s temperature due to an increase in greenhouse gases Eutrophication- an increase in the amount of nutrients, such as nitrates, in the environment
11
Recycling- the process of breaking down discarded material for reuse in other products
