Agenda Homework review and discussion Pass the books Reading MP7 and MP8 Break Shake the M&Ms Reading F.LE.1-3 Homework and closing remarks 1.2

1.3 Homework Review and Discussion Activity 1: Table Discussion: Discuss your write up for the day 2 math task Function Rules: Compare your strategies with others at your table. Reflect on how you might revise your own solution and/or presentation.
4
1.4 Pass the Books Pass the pile of books along an increasing line of people. Record the time from the moment the books are picked up off the table to the moment they are placed back on the table. Record the data as a collection of ordered pairs (# of people, time required). Activity 2:
5
1.5 Pass the Books Discuss: what type of model (linear, exponential, trigonometric,...) would best fit this situation? Why? Plot your data points on graph paper. Do they appear to fit your suggested model? Estimate and draw a line of best fit for you data. (How many ways might you do this?) Activity 2:
6
1.6 Reading MP7 and MP8 Read the Standard for Mathematical Practice. MP7. Look for and make use of structure. Turn and talk: how did you see this practice standard in the activity you have just completed? Activity 3:
7
1.7 Reading MP7 and MP8 Read the Standard for Mathematical Practice. MP8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Turn and talk: how did you see this practice standard in the activity you have just completed? Activity 3:

1.9 Shake the M&M’s You are going to record data of the form (trial number, # of M&M’s) over several trials. Count out 4 M&M’s. This will be trial 0, so record the ordered pair (0, 4). Pour the M&M’s onto a sheet of paper, and count how many have an M showing. Add as many to the pile as had an M showing. Record your new number of M&M’s as trial 1. Repeat, for at least 7 trials, until you run out of M&M’s. Activity 4:
10
1.10 Shake the M&M’s Discuss: What type of model (linear, exponential, trigonometric,...) would best fit this situation? Why? Plot your data points on graph paper. Do they appear to fit your suggested model? Construct a specific model of your suggested type that, in your opinion, best fits the data. Activity 4:
11
1.11 Shake the M&M’s How did you see MP7 and MP8 in this activity? MP7. Look for and make use of structure. MP8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Activity 4:

1.12 Reading F-LE.1-5 Read these content standards from the Functions conceptual category. Turn and talk: how did you see these content standards in the activities you have completed today? Activity 5:

1.13 Homework and Closing Remarks Homework (to be included in journal): Day 3 Math Task: Rumors Day 3 Class Reflection Reading CCSSM overview of the Modeling conceptual category (pp. 72-73) Activity 6:
