M OUTH & T EETH To break down food into smaller pieces and mix it with saliva so that it is easier to swallow.

S ALIVARY G LANDS Produce a liquid called saliva which contains enzymes that help break down food.

E SOPHAGUS The muscular tube that squeezes food into your stomach.

S TOMACH A muscular sac that turns food into a liquid called chyme using muscles, enzymes, and acids.

L IVER An organ that stores excess nutrients, toxins, and also makes bile which is used to break up the fats we eat.

P ANCREAS Makes hormones, regulates blood sugar, and makes enzymes that neutralize the stomach acid in chyme.

G ALL B LADDER Stores the bile made by the liver until it is needed by the small intestine.

S MALL I NTESTINE A 20 foot long, narrow muscular tube that is lined with villi that absorb nutrients from chyme into the bloodstream.

L ARGE I NTESTINE A 5 foot long, wide muscular tube that removes excess water from waste turning it into poop. The colon

A PPENDIX A small hollow area at the start of the large intestine that is of no use.

A NUS AND R ECTUM The rectum is where waste collects before leaving the body. The anus is where waste exits the body.
