American Medicine Chest Challenge November 2010 – 3 locations Clinton Twp. Senior Expo April 29, 2011 DEA National Event April 30, 2011 – 2 locations Macomb County Senior Fun Fest June 2011 Henry Ford Family Fair/Drug Take Back September 2011 October 2011 – 2 locations

Reduce Youth Access Educate Community about Rx Drug Abuse Inform about the Need to Secure & Properly Dispose Mobilize Your Coalition Engage Youth Promote Awareness of Your Coalition Create New Partnerships Publicize Permanent Disposal Sites

Choose a Date: DEA National Drug Take Back Day Saturday, 4/18/12 10 to 2 p.m.

Begin to Plan Allow at least 2 months to plan Create a Timeline

Create a Coalition Work Group or Committee (3 to 5 members) Who else do we need to involve in planning?

Select a Site (Must Have Police Present to Collect Narcotics) Within the Geographic Boundaries of Your Coalition Police Dept. Office Senior Center Community Center Recreational Center Church School City Hall Parking Lot Any Accessible Building

Consider Overlap with Other Coalitions Contact Local Law Enforcement to Engage Request Law Enforcement register with local DEA contact Leigh Ann Halas 313/

Coordinate DEA Take Back with Other Coalitions Select Site within your geographic boundaries Publicize within your geographic boundaries Contact Media within your geographic boundaries (MPN will connect with major Media) Coordinate with other coalitions that “overlap”

Check with Law Enforcement for Protocol At the Take Back Separate Drugs from Container (To get an accurate estimate taken back) Separate Liquids Cover Person’s Name on Rx Containers

Draft Informational Materials To adapt Chippewa Valley Coalition’s Materials, contact: Bradley Mott

Create/Adapt Flyers to Publicize Event Key Information: Stats on Issues of Rx Abuse, Take Back location & address, date, timeframe for drop off, what you will/not take back (needles & liquids), how to package, contact for questions, your Coalition name and partners

Create Dissemination Plan to Publicize Event Pharmacies Stores Schools Senior Centers Libraries Churches Restaurants Community Centers

Create a Media Plan to Publicize Locally DEA widely publicizes MPN will release to major Media outlets, including the Macomb Daily, Detroit News/Free Press, major TV and Radio stations

Identify Volunteers for Event Involve Adult Coalition Members & Other Volunteers Involve Youth** 1 to 2 Adults per site 2 to 3 Youth per site

Determine Shifts for Volunteers Example: 10 to 12 noon Noon to 2 p.m.

Create a Survey – Keep it Simple Possible Survey Items: What is your Zip Code? How did you hear about the event today? Give options: Local newspaper (which one), church newsletter, (which one) school, saw poster (where), other? Why are you disposing today? Give options: expired/unused medications; reduce youth access to medications; protect environment; other? Would you like to be notified by for the next event? (provide space for )

Conduct Survey Provide Informational Materials Ensure that Drugs Will Be Weighed Take Photos!!
