Warm-up 9/5 What do you think the most important event in history is and why? Answer in your binder.

2 What is History? History- The study of events from the past
Archaeologist – a person who studies human history using artifacts Artifact- a human-made object

3 How do we keep track of history?
Timelines are a common way to keep track of history. Humans started keeping track of time in Year 1. Years before Year 1 are referred to as B.C.E (Before the Common Era) Years after Year 1 are referred to as C.E.(Signaling the start of the Common Era). You may also hear this called A.D. (which stands for Anno Domini and means “the First Year”)

4 Think of B. C. E. years as negative numbers
Think of B.C.E. years as negative numbers. The further you get from Year 1, you go further back in time C.E. years start at Year 1 and go all the way up until present day (Year 2014)

5 Add these events on your timeline…
10,000 B.C.E- The Neolithic Revolution comes to an end 3100 B.C.E- Civilization emerges in Mesopotamia 2600 B.C.E- The first pyramids in Egypt are built 500 B.C.E- Democracy is established in Greece 220 B.C.E- The Qin Dynasty builds the Great Wall of China

6 Add these events to your timeline…
70 C.E.- The Colosseum is built in Ancient Rome 1215 C.E.- The Magna Carta is signed 1492 C.E.- Columbus lands in the Bahamas 1776 C.E.- The United States declares independence from Great Britain 1945 C.E.- World War II ends

On your worksheet, create a timeline of the 10 most important events of your life. Ideas: When you were born First day of school Moved New brother/sister This will be graded!
