Principles of Design = the organization of a work of art
Write the definition of each principle (5 pts each) Draw a design that illustrates each principle. (5 pts each)
2
The Design Principles of Visual Arts
Rhythm Movement Balance Proportion Variety Emphasis Unity
3
See how RHYTHM is created
= Repeating an element over and over in a work of art; similar to pattern; like the beat of artwork THINK: Music, dance -beat. * bum bum bum Occurs when movement is repeated Used to direct your eye See how RHYTHM is created
4
Rhythm in the Elements of Art: DRAW a pattern like these

5
See Movement created by pattern in art
= an illusion of motion; when your eye follows a path; caused by repetition and rhythm Your eye will move around an artwork because of the way the artist repeated things Adds excitement See Movement created by pattern in art
6
Movement in the Elements of Art: DRAW 1 type of movement

7
Balance = a sense of stability in the body of work; a feeling of equal weight. See Balance in art
8
An experiment with balance

Proportion = (scale) refers to the relationships of the size of objects in a body of work. Artists learned that distorting or exaggerating proportion could alter the effect of a work on the viewer Artists can show what is important by changing the sizes of objects ** DRAW a person with an exaggerated feature
15
Examples of PROPORTION
16
Variety is the spice of life!!!
= Differences in artwork; You can achieve variety by using difference shapes, textures, colors and values in your work. Adds visual interest; keeps your eye looking
17
Examples of VARIETY in art:
** (choose 2) DRAW a variety of either lines, shapes, textures
18
Emphasis = One object or area that stands out or attracts attention, an area of interest that is important AKA “focal point” Created with strong contrast, highlights, large size ONLINE ACTIVITY: Find the FOCAL POINT!
19
Line Shape Texture Space Color Value
Emphasis: in the Elements of Art: DRAW 1 of these to show how one part is emphasized ** notice how 1 is different in each group Line Shape Texture Space Color Value
20
Unity = everything fits together as a whole; AKA “harmony”
Your work should not appear disjointed or confusing. Lines, shapes, colors, textures, value or space fit together to form one unit Composition appears to be a whole not a collection of parts
21
Examples of UNITY/Harmony:
22
Unity: in the Elements of Art: DRAW 1 of these to show Harmony
