3 Major food groups Meat, fish, eggs and beans provide proteins that our bodies need to repair themselves. Grains and starchy foods (rice, bread, pasta) are a good source of energy. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that help protect our bodies from illnesses. Milk and dairy also contain protein, and they are a source of calcium, which is very important for our bones. Fats and sugars are also important, for energy, though in this country many of us sometimes eat too many of them.
