Voluntary, but…colleges must maintain accreditation standards to receive federal funding Heightened pressure to be accountable to public and provide proof that students are learning Higher Learning Commission peer review process ◦ Review teams examine documents, visit campus, etc. to determine accreditation status

Alternative accreditation track whose purpose is “to assure and advance the quality of higher education” Aligns accreditation with continuous improvement and quality principles (TQM, Six Sigma, Malcolm Baldrige) Continuous review of important issues with action projects to accomplish changes
