WORKING CHARTS FROM PARALLEL SESSIONS Hard Skills Basic manufacturing skills (math, trig, calipers) Soft Skills Lifestyle skills (work independently/in teams, stress management conflict resolution, health/fitness, family support) Work ethic (loyalty, self pride) Education System ‘applied learning’ – more than just a test (GED/SAT/ACT/ISTEP) Integrate working and school Non-traditional students – online degrees, night classes Prepare students for the jobs Also means, need the people with the expertise to teach the students Selling the idea of a college education K-12, start young College visit dates for 6 th -12 th grades Central resource center for funding college tuition Awareness of funding available Renew interest - Industrial arts in high schools Apprenticeships/Trademanship CAREER ACADEMIES Have people earn degrees to go into a second careers Exposure to aerospace manufacturing – in middle/high school Testing at young ages, then direction to specified field (dominant in socialist countries) Tuition assistance as related to specific aerospace/technical programs Aerospace specific skill sets – Aerospace Certification Line up schools with industry suppliers – be educated on tools in use today in industry Improve Indiana education to be world class WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SESSION October 5, 2005 @ Rolls-Royce Corporation

WORKING CHARTS FROM PARALLEL SESSIONS PEOPLE IN WORKFORCE Different state of mind for manufacturing aerospace parts (close enough isn’t good enough, safety factors, quality) Knowledge of parts, parts are only small part of large engine, don’t see the finished project Incentive to keep college graduates in Indiana In a small company – flexibility Motivation!!!! Most people in manufacturing are at the low level – and have low motivation Top tier people will be there – need the ‘shop’ people Promoting cultural awareness and acceptances Understand finances/business behind losing jobs to China Draw experienced people from other states or countries Loyalty of state to student WHAT SKILLS ARE NEEDED IN AEROSPACE? Skill assessments – Where are we? In Indiana, in the world? Identify the job skill requirements Identify training/skills requirements from alliances of companies WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SESSION October 5, 2005 @ Rolls-Royce Corporation
