Your Perspectives on Transfer: Presenters: Eva Schiorring, M.A. Kelley Karandjeff, Ed.M. Findings from Introduction to Engineering Students at Chabot College, Fall 2010
2
Today’s Agenda Context: Why and how are we doing this research? [5 min] Findings – Part 1: What is supporting you toward your transfer goal? [10 min] Findings – Part 2: What challenges have you encountered so far? [10 min] Group Think: What can you, Chabot do to help you overcome these challenges? [15 min] Next Steps: Where do we go from here? [5 min]
3
Context Why are we doing this research? Understand transfer challenges and supports for students in career-oriented disciplines in CA community colleges Why focus on Engineering? CA predicts a shortage of 40,000 engineers by 2014; community college transfer = one way to increase baccalaureate holders in this field
4
Context cont… How are we doing this research? Analyze data on community college transfer students who achieved a bachelor’s in Engineering Collect perspectives from students through surveys, focus groups and interviews Beginning = You! Surveys: 37 participants Interviews: 13 participants
5
Findings – Part 1 What is supporting you toward your transfer goal? Your Motivation & Passion Your Introduction to Engineering Course Your Personal Support Network ASSIST Four-Year Universities Financial Aid
6
Findings – Part 2 What Challenges Are You Encountering? Balancing School, Work & Family Accessing Required Courses Paying for College Getting Appropriate Advising/Counseling Managing Grades /Academic Intensity Connecting to a Community Pinning Down Your Interests Dealing with Long Path to Transfer, Degree
7
Findings – Part 2 Group Think: What Actions can you, Chabot, and/or four- year institutions take to help you overcome these challenges? What are you already doing that you could share w/ your peers? Brainstorm in teams of 2-3; select 3-4 issues and identify 1 action for each responsible party (e.g., you, Chabot, 4-yrs); be prepared to share w/ whole group.
8
Actions You Could Take… Actions Chabot Could Take… Actions 4-Year Institutions Could Take… School/Work/ Family Balance Course Availability Finances Counseling/ Advising Grades/Academic Intensity Community Interests Path
9
What Next? Where do we go from here? Continue interviewing Chabot Engineering students up to the point of transfer Complete research on other disciplines and compare Convene educators, employers to discuss findings and take action
