Subject – Verb Agreement Basics: When the subject of a sentence is composed of two or more nouns or pronouns connected by and, use a plural verb. When two or more singular nouns or pronouns are connected by or or nor, use a singular verb. Either my mom OR my sister IS going to have to loan me a shirt to wear. my mom is going to… my sister is going to…
5
Subject – Verb Basics… Do not be misled by a phrase that comes between the subject and the verb. The verb agrees with the subject, not with a noun or pronoun in the phrase. THIS IS WHERE WE OFTEN LOOK LEFT! –One of the boxes IS open. –The books in the back of my trunk ARE probably beginning to mold. –The team captain, as well as her players, IS anxious about tonight’s game.
6
Look Left! continued… In order to out-smart the ACT (and therefore dominate the test), we must physically CROSS OFF the “JUNK” the separates each subject from its verb. For example: The price of these jeans IS/ARE reasonable. “of these jeans” is the junk, so we cross it off We are left with: The price IS reasonable.

Tricks to watch for: 1.Either/or and neither/nor are SINGULAR. 2.Each, everybody, everyone, nobody, somebody, are singular. Ex. Each student needs to learn the Look Left! rule. 3.Expressions such as with, together with, including, accompanied by, in addition to, or as well as DO NOT change the number of the subject. Ex. The team captain as well as her team IS anxious for tonight’s game.
