They helped the king to govern –The King’s army was small. Defence depended on his vassals’ private armies. When his kingdom was in danger, the king called on the nobles for help –In special situations, such as wars or marriage agreements, the king received help from Church and important nobles

5 Main things you have to know about Nobles and Knights 2.2.2. The Nobles or Knights –Some nobles were very rich and owned large fiefs. Others owned only their horses and their weapons –War was the nobles’ main activity. They fought on horseback, and their weapons were the lance, the shield, the sword or the mace (maza) –Nobles’ sons started their military training when they were eight years old, as pages to an important noble and learned to fight. continue

6 Main things you have to know about Nobles and Knights (continue…) –At the age of fifteen, they became squires and served a Knight. If they proved their worth, about five years later they were made knights at a special ceremony –In wartime, the king asked the nobles for their help. Nobles had to be ready to go to war at any time, so they often trained in tournaments. They also used these fights to gain prestige

7 Noblewomen The most important function of noblewomen was to marry and have children to continue the family line. Marriages were arranged by parents, sometimes when the future husband and wife were only children. 1.Noblewomen: organised the servants, educated the children and did sewing and weaving (coser y tejer) 2.In theory, they had to obey their husband in everything. They rarely left the castle 3.Women who did not marry went into convents
