2 One of the most common excuses given by those who are on probation is: “I didn’t know.” This probation session will offer you the opportunity to understand your situation and the policies that govern students. It is your responsibility as a student to be aware of the district’s probation policies and procedures at the respective college or center you are planning to attend. 4 What is Probation? Probation is defined as unsatisfactory progress in one or both of the following two areas:  Falling below minimum standards will place you on probation  Academic - Cumulative Grade Point Average falls below 2.0  Progress - Cumulative units completed compared against units attempted is 50% or less

7 Consequences of Probation Related to Registration Important Notice Regarding Enrollment Priority Changes Effective Fall 2014 Enrollment (registration) priorities are changing effective with the Fall 2014 registration cycle. Per new Title 5 Regulations of the California Community Colleges, your calculated academic standing will impact your assigned registration date. A second consecutive term on academic or progress probation will result in the loss of continuing student registration until the student is no longer on probation. This means the student would register after all continuing and new students. These changes will not affect registration for Summer/Fall 2013 but it is important for you to be aware of how these changes will affect registration dates for future terms.

9 Academic Probation A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units as shown by the official academic record shall be placed on academic probation if the student has earned a grade point average below 2.0 in all units which were graded on the basis of the grading system.

13 Question #3 What is Academic Probation? a. When you attempt at least 12 semester units and your GPA falls below 2.0 b. When you complete at least 12 units c. When you do not have a declared major d. When you drop all of your classes

14 Progress Probation A student who has enrolled in a total of at least 12 semester units as shown by the official academic record shall be placed on progress probation when the percentage of all units in which the student has enrolled and for which entries of “W”, “I”, “NP” and “NC” are recorded reaches or exceeds fifty percent (50 percent).

18 How to Figure Your Probation Status for Progress Probation  Use Cumulative Totals on transcript  Add the Grade Point Units (GPU) and your “W”, “I”, “NC”, “NP” (WINC) and divide the total by 2.  If total is equal to or larger than (GPU) you are on Progress Probation

19  CUM WINC = 16 + CUM GPU = 12  2 (16 + 12) = 28  2 = 14 14 is greater than 12 CUM GPU This student is dropping more units than completing and is on Progress Probation Progress Probation Example

20 Question #4 If you attempt 12 units and you receive 9 units of W’s and 3 units with an A grade, are you on progress probation? A. Yes B. No

21 Academic & Progress Dismissal  Dismissed after three consecutive semesters of a Cumulative G.P.A. of less than 2.0 after attempting 12 or more GPU units.  Or you have not completed 50% or more of the units attempted in three semesters  Excluding summer sessions

22 Appeal of Dismissal  Dismissal - required to sit out of the district for the following: Dismissal 1: 1 Semester Dismissal 2: 2 Semesters Dismissal 3: 4 Semesters  May appeal any dismissal through petition at the campus or center you plan to attend if extenuating circumstances exist; must provide third party documentation  Examples of extenuating circumstances include: accident, illness, death in the immediate family, military duty, jury duty, job displacement, family displacement, instructor error and/or other circumstances which are justifiable in the judgment of the college president or his designee  Turn in Dismissal Appeal by specified deadline as instructed by Admissions and Records

23 Question #5 If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.00 for three consecutive semesters, what is your academic standing? a. Academic Probation Level 1 b. Academic Dismissal (AD) c. Progress Probation Level 2 d. None of the above

24 Helpful Hints  Repeat “D” or “F” grades to improve GPA  Drop courses before deadlines (refer to class schedule or college catalog)  Go to class  Discuss difficulties with instructors  Discuss schedule changes with counselor  Register early  Select classes and unit load wisely  Utilize tutoring services  Enroll in appropriate Counseling classes

25 Repeating Courses  Students will be allowed to repeat a course after receiving a substandard grade(s) and or a W, NC, or NP one time after initial attempt. A petition will be required to enroll in a course a third time. A petition will also be required to enroll in a course a fourth time only if extenuating circumstances exist  Your GPA will be calculated differently based on the number of times you have attempted the course

26 Question #6 How many times can a student repeat a class, after receiving a D, F, or W grade, without filing a petition? a. One b. Two c. Three d. Four
