Purpose: of the handout  Provide overview and important information  Talk about goals  Talk about what will be learned (skills, concepts)  Tell students what they will be doing or focusing on  Practice using language that will speak to students  Think about ways to make the unit plan material engaging and interesting, accessible Practice talking about your unit in such a way as to make it interesting to the students  Practice thinking about how you might want to communicate with parents

3. Tension  Handouts need to have important info Focus, dates, details, main ideas, content  On the other hand, they need to have a sound bite quality. They are by nature the kind of things people skim ○ But, also come back to…  So, they need to be pretty easy to read and get information from quickly and easily  Decision: what to include, what not to include

4. Requirements: two student handouts  One for the unit overall  One for one of the projects/assignments

5. Copy and paste  Certainly use other work you have done for the unit to “fill” your student handout.  That is, things you have written for other parts of the unit can be included in the student handout.

6. Answers to the question…  So, what makes a good handout? Memorable – a joke or making it sing, clip art Get to the point – don’t draw it out too much Bullets Aesthetically pleasing Make it sound like you, sound excited ○ Passion, not boring, ○ Don’t introduce new vocab or scary stuff Organization, headings, spacing, bolding, italics, fun fonts, Checklists Expectations, what you want… Gauging the work for them
