Metamorphic rocks CJ MacKay Jefferson vivanco
2
Metamorphism The process of forming metamorphic rocks within the lithosphere, making the rocks more dense and less porous.
3
Metamorphic rock Are formed from existing rock (sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic) by the action of heat, pressure, and chemicals.
4
Parent rocks The parent rock is the rock that is metamorphosed
5
Texture Non foliation Foliation
6
gives the appearance of parallel light and dark bands,or is simply a platy or flaky texture
7
Non Foliation display a massive texture, caused by the recrystallization of the crystals that were present in the relatively homogenous parent rock from which they were formed
8
Recrystallization is the process of changing the mineral composition or increasing the size of the mineral crystals with out melting
9
Regional metamorphism When high temperatures and pressure affect large regions of earths crust, they produce large belts known as regional metamorphism
10
Contact Metamorphism When molten material, such as that in an igneous intrusion, comes in contact with solid rock.
11
Hydrothermal metamorphism When very hot water reacts with rock and alters its chemical and mineral composition.
