1
The States of Matter A screencast.
2
Preview questions What are the three states of matter? Write down an example of matter changing from one state to another. What caused this change?
3
Kinetic theory States of matter are physically different. Solids have shape and volume. Liquids change shape, not volume. Gases are free to spread in all directions. Solid Gas Gas Liquid
4
The role of energy Thermal energy is the kinetic energy of a substances atoms. Higher temp-particles move faster. Lower temp-particles move slower. Energy is the capacity to do work (change or move matter).
5
Measure of average kinetic energy. More kinetic energy (atoms moving) the higher temperature. Temperature Phase change graph
6
Energy and changes of state Evaporation-liquid to gas. Condensation-gas to a liquid. Freezing-liquid to a solid. Melting-solid to a liquid.
7
Conservation of mass and energy Mass cannot be created or destroyed. Think of a burning match… List the products of this reaction Total mass of the match and oxygen=to the products (ash, smoke, and gases) Energy cannot be created or destroyed
8
Preview Questions, reflection The three states of matter are: –Solid –Liquid –Gas
9
Preview Questions, reflection Ice to liquid water melting. Liquid water to Ice freezing. Liquid water to gas evaporation. Gas to liquid condensation. Examples
