Objective: Students will be able to differentiate between the three states of matter. Agenda: DO NOW Matter Notes/PowerPoint Independent Practice Exit Ticket
3
What are the 3 Phases of Matter? There are 3 ways to organize matter based on the amount of energy in each. ▪ Solid ▪ Liquid ▪ Gas
4
A solid is matter in which the molecules are very close together and cannot move around. Matter that has a definite shape Which shows a solid? Examples of solids include rocks, wood, and ice (frozen water).
5
A liquid is matter in which the molecules are close together and move around slowly. Matter that has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. Examples of liquids include drinking water, mercury at room temperature, and lava (molten rock). Which shows a liquid?
6
A gas is matter in which the molecules are widely separated, move around freely, and move at high speeds. Matter that takes both the shape and volume of its container Examples of gases include the gases we breathe (nitrogen, oxygen, and others), the helium in balloons, and steam (water vapor). Which shows a gas?
7
*ALL substances have different phases For example, the 3 phases of water are: Solid water: ICE Liquid water: WATER Gas water: WATER VAPOR
8
*How do we move between the 3 different states of matter? -By adding or taking away ENERGY
