Ethics -defines what is morally right and wrong -- ideas that a group or individual has to do with questions of right and wrong (morally) -Defining good and evil -Set of guidelines for living your life by (or thinking about it) - Guides for behaviour - Based on your view of reality - Moral values that we place important in our lives

Value -something that you believe in -Something you feel strongly towards because you see it as a right or good thing -What has an emotional meaning for you -Appreciating something; placing it high on a scale in relation to other things -Holding something dear -Something’s worth - a particular moral or ethical belief or guideline - wide range of applications – family, life in general, friends, houses, shares in companies, pieces of rock, scarcity, aesthetics, uniqueness, intrinsic properties, education, learning, opportunities, awards, good grades, time, popularity, celebrity, cars, art, wine, clothes, money

Good -not bad -Benefits everyone -Selfless as opposed to selfish -Morally correct -Well done -Pure -Objectively right - subjectively right - intentions are objectively correct (morally) - values are right. Benefit majority of people - Satisfying -Contains the sound of a Hammond organ -Well-liked

Quality -best alternative amongst choices - good things in people and objects -Good and bad aspects/characteristics -Reliability -Aesthetic appeal - Intrinsic properties that things possess -

List as many ethical issues as you can think of. What makes each an ethical issue?

Ethical Issues -Abortion --euthanasia -Animal rights/treatment -Genetic engineering/stem cell research -Homosexuality -Capital punishment -Corporal punishment -Nuclear energy/energy sources - global warming/environmental concerns -Killing someone and eating them - organ transplants

What defines an issue as being ‘ethical’? -comes in conflict with ‘good’, ‘value’,’quality’ - decision-making issue -Two or more opposing sides : complicated or detailed argument - something that would ‘interfere’ with our personal moral values - raises questions of means and the final outcome ie does the end justify the means? - practical implications – to do with ‘real life’ situations - impact on the quality of people’s lives

Where does our sense of morality come from? - God/Gods/Supernatural beings/Scriptures - Our culture /family/friends/schooling/media/laws/social norms - personal intuition - part of our evolutionary development - application of your sense of Reality and truth What purpose(s) does it serve? - helps society function better eg. Avoiding/dealing with conflict, avoiding negative consequences for a community.
