Plants Plants are an important part of our environment. Without plants, animals and human beings could not survive. Think of a few ways we, as humans need plants…

Plants produce us with: food oxygen medicines building materials seasonings candy &drinks industrial products dyes & decorations manufactured good paper

Plants are producers Plants are the only living thing able to make their own food. There are a few things plants must have to survive… What do you think those things are?...

THE SUN: MAIN SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR LIFE ON EARTH

Water

Soil

Carbon Dioxide

In order to grow, green plants use sunlight and store its energy in their leaves and stems. Sunlight enables plants to convert water into foods needed by the plant. Plants also need carbon dioxide, which all animals (including humans) give off as they breathe. This remarkable process is called: Photosynthesis

Where does photosynthesis occur? Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves of a plant.

Photosynthesis (put in notes) The process by which all plants make their own food. Green plants need 1. carbon dioxide from the air 2. water and minerals from the soil 3. energy from the sun

Paste this diagram in your notes and fill in the blanks correctly

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight to make energy/sugar and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water AN OVERVIEW OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS Carbon dioxide WaterGlucoseOxygen gas PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Energy for plants (notes) The water and carbon dioxide combine into sugars and oxygen. Sugars are the food for the plant. Plants use some of the sugars to grow, and store the rest in their tissues. When you eat a plant, you take in energy the plants stored.

How much glucose/sugar does a plant make? Plants make enough sugar to be used during the night and on cloudy days when they don’t get sunlight. The extra sugar is stored in the plant’s leaves and other parts.

Let’s review What do plants need to make their own food?

Plants need water Water helps the seed germinate The plant grows

Plants need the sun The sun gives the plant warmth The sun gives the plant light to help it make food

The plant needs minerals The plant gets minerals from the soil to make it grow strong and healthy

The end result

Photosynthesis Animation Animation

There is one cell structure that allows plants to conduct photosynthesis Think of a cell part that plants have and animals do not…

Why are plants green? Think back to the parts of a plant cell…

WHY ARE PLANTS GREEN? Plant Cells have Green Chloroplasts

Chloroplasts Chlororplasts contain pigments that absorb sunlight. They use the energy to make food in a process called photosynthesis.

Put in notes Chloroplasts are the only organelles that can perform photosynthesis. The pigment chorophyll gives plants their green color.

Why is photosynthesis important for life to exist? Every ecosystem is dependent on photosynthesis. Remember! The process of how plants make their own food is photosynthesis.

Homework Draw a picture to represent photosynthesis. Make sure to include all needed parts of photosynthesis (label them) Under the picture write what is taking place. USE YOUR DIAGRAM IN YOUR JOURNAL AS A GUIDE!
