The most effective program for early detection of breast cancer includes three steps 1. A breast exam by a health care professional starting at age 18 - at least every 3 years starting at age 20 - every year after age 40 2. A monthly BSE starting at age 20 3. A mammogram, or breast x-ray, every year starting at age 40 - If under 40 and have a history of breast cancer or other concerns about personal risk, talk to your doctor about when to start mammograms and how often to get them
