1. Habit 1- Be proactive- You are in charge of your life 2. Habit 2- Begin with the end in mind- make plans for the future- Mission and Goals 3. Habit 3- Put First Things First Learn to prioritize the events in your life to make sure you reach your goals. You put the most important things first so they are sure to get done

Will Power- the strength to say yes to your most important things Mission and goals Activities that lead to completion of your mission and goals Won’t Power- the strength to say no to less important things and to peer pressure Video games, phone calls, TV, sleeping

Your busy life is like a small suitcase. There are only so many hours in a day If you fold your clothes when you pack a suitcase, you can fit more in If you plan your life’s activities, you can get more done

Important- activities that contribute to your mission and your goals School work, work, etc. Urgent- pressing things, activities that demand immediate attention Ringing phone, eating, test next period

Addicted to urgency Puts off important things until the last moment creates urgency Get a rush for doing something quickly Urgent things always come up ▪ Phone calls, sick kids, called into work Problems with Procrastination Because things are done at the last minute, they are never done to their best Creates unnecessary stress Burnout

Doing things that are urgent, but not important Hanging out with friends, phone calls, TV shows Try to please others- Are afraid to say no because it will hurt their feelings These urgent things seem important, but they are not The yes man ends up never making anyone happy He is fickle and has no backbone

Problems with being a yes man Reputation for being a pleaser Lack of discipline Feeling like doormat for others to wipe their feet on

The category of waste and excess These activities are neither urgent nor important TV, video games, mall trips, etc. Professional Couch Potato Never had a job, may never get one

The results of living in Quadrant 4 Lack of responsibility Guilt Flakiness Nothing, absolutely nothing

The Quadrant of Excellence Made up of: Important, but not urgent things Relaxation Building friendships Planning ahead Doing assignments- on time Prioritizers are people who “have it together”

They can say “no” with a smile because they have other things to do Are never surprised by teachers asking for assignments Have plenty of quality fun, because they have already done the hard stuff

Buy a planner (use a spiral notebook) Write assignments Appointments To-do lists Goals Planners don’t tie you down… the free up more time

Plan Weekly Take 15 minutes to plan your week Identify the Big Rocks what are the most important things I need to accomplish this week ▪ Think of the roles you play in your life ▪ Student- study for English test ▪ Friend- birthday part Block out time for your Big Rocks ▪ These are the important things, so schedule them first ▪ Put in the little rocks- these are everyday, less important things
