Space, Cells, and Human Body Systems

 1. Earth’s Atmosphere- ◦ What would happen if Earth’s atmosphere was NOT made up of 20% Oxygen?

 Most of the time kids say that we could still support small mammals or a small population, but this is WRONG!  Most, if any at all, living organisms would not survive. Living organisms that depend on oxygen rely on it being in the 20% range.

2. Why does the space suit need to be insulated?

 2. An astronaut needs to take his atmosphere with him ◦ one of the important parts of the space suit is for insulation. It is COLD in space and a person will freeze without the space suit. ◦ He or she also needs the right breathing apparatus- a human needs to have about 20% oxygen to stay alive.

 3. What are a few essential things that a space ship needs?

 The space craft needs: ◦ An Oxygen/carbon dioxide scrubber ◦ Food source ◦ Water source ◦ Energy to keep the climate in a livable range ◦

 1. What is the most basic unit of all living things?  2. What is the structure of a group of specialized cells that all perform the same function?  3. What is the structure that contains different types of tissue working to do a major function in the body?

 1. The cell  2. tissue  3. organs

 4. What is the organization that uses multiple organs to do a main function in the body in order for it to maintain homeostastis?  5. List the levels of organization from Smallest to Largest.  6. give an example of each in #5

 4. Organ Systems  5. cells to tissue to organs to organ systems  6. Cells – nerve cell, muscle cell ◦ Tissue- skin tissue Organ- heart, brain, pancreas, stomach Organ system- circulatory, respiratory, muscular, nervous

 Look at the following images of plant and animal cells  Review the pictures of the cells and identify the common organelles we studied during our unit  Know what each organelle does  Talk it over as a class and review – can someone teach the class?

 What organelles are only found in Plant cells?  What organelles are only found in Animal Cells?

 Plant cells have ◦ Cell Walls ◦ Large Vacuoles ◦ Chloroplasts Animal Cells have Lysosomes Small vacuoles

 Where is sugar made in the plant? Where does water enter the plant?  Plants have special tissues, the xylem and phloem, that transport water and minerals through out the plant. What are these tissues similar to in animals?

 Sugar is made in the leaves and water travels from the roots into the plant  The vascular system of the plant is similar to the arteries and veins in an animal.

 Look over the test for the human body systems and review what each system does and what organs go with each system  Good luck on the test on Thursday  And do your very best on the writing tests on Tuesday and Wednesday- take your time!
