WHAT HAPPENED? Saturday, April 26 th, 1986: Reactor #4 was undergoing a test to test backup power supply incase of a power loss. Power fell too low. Concentration of Xenon-135 rose Workers continued to test in order to control rising levels. All rods were immediately ordered back in, but it was too late. Rods became too hot and melted. Explosion blows hole through roof, graphite fire begins. Meltdown has officially began. About 30% of radiation begins to escape. 31 deaths that day (mainly workers and firefighters) Estimated 900,000 since (due to cancer)
