2 What is assistive technology? ◦ Assistive technology is defined as any item, piece of equipment, or product that is surgically implanted or the replacement of such device (e.g. A cochlear implant). It also increases, maintains, or improves the functional performance of an individual with a disability.

3 The law on assistive learning ◦ Federal law requires that it be considered when developing an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) for every student with a disability of any type.

4 Physically Disabled ◦ Students should be provided with alternative methods of accessing keyboard, mouse, and/or monitor. ◦ You can also use Dragon Talk’s Dragon Naturally Speaking can also be helpful. You can also use various internet.

5 Hearing Impaired ◦ According to http://www.doe.virginia.gov/special_ed/disabilities/sen sory_disabilities/,visual impairment including blindness means an impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a child’s educational performance. The term includes both partial sight and blindness ◦ Hearing impaired students should be provided with an FM magnification system and hearing aid.

6 Seeing Impaired According to http://www.doe.virginia.gov/special_ed/disabilities/sensor y_disabilities/, seeing impaired is defined as an impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a child’s educational performance. The term includes both partial sight and blindness. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/special_ed/disabilities/sensor y_disabilities/ ◦ Students should be provided with a cane and texts written in braille. ◦ A screen reader for blind students. ◦ A magnifying control panel for students who are visually impaired.

7 Learning Impaired ◦ Learning impaired is defined as a condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the level expected of those of the same age, especially when not associated with a physical handicap. ◦ Students should be provided with interactive storybooks that enhance learning.
