Tempus Project SCM-C015A05-SCG - Pilot Implementation of ECTS - September 13, 2006, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Portugal Courses on Electrical and Computer Engineering: Two cycles in a row Our approach - I Integrated MSc 5 year long study cycle (300 ECTS) integrating: 1st cycle (180 ECTS) 2nd cycle (120 ECTS) Emphasis on flexibility, broad spectrum Specialized MSc 2 year long 2nd cycle (120 ECTS) Focused on specialization 1st cycle = “Licenciatura” 2nd cycle = MSc Engineer habilitation ≥ 300 ECTS

Tempus Project SCM-C015A05-SCG - Pilot Implementation of ECTS - September 13, 2006, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Portugal Courses on Electrical and Computer Engineering: Two cycles in a row Why a Long Study Program integrating 1st and 2nd cycles We argue that 10 semesters are needed (300 ECTS) to deliver a design engineer in E&CE. This is the case in most European countries - results from THEIERE [1] (Thematic Harmonisation in Electrical and Information EngineeRing in Europe) [1] http://www.eaeeie.org/theiere/ [1] http://www.eaeeie.org/theiere/ This is also mandatory for membership in Portuguese Engineers Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros) 3 year long cycle can give employability, but lacks sound professional engineering skills - results from CLUSTER [2] (Consortium linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research) [2] http://www.cluster.org/manifestoes/Bologna_03.html [2]

Tempus Project SCM-C015A05-SCG - Pilot Implementation of ECTS - September 13, 2006, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Portugal Courses on Electrical and Computer Engineering: Two cycles in a row Why Specialized MSc? To receive graduates from other institutions with specialized background To deliver specialists on specific hot topics No additional costs on faculty members Five current specializations: Electric Energy and Automation Microelectronics and Digital Systems Corporate Cooperative Networks Robotics and Sensorial Systems Telecomunications

Tempus Project SCM-C015A05-SCG - Pilot Implementation of ECTS - September 13, 2006, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Portugal Courses on Electrical and Computer Engineering: Two cycles in a row Change from pre- to post-Bologne All students enrolled in the old curriculum have to move to the Integrated MSc curriculum. Till now, no harsh, no pain on that move: so far, so good! We benefit from a previous restruture accomplished two years ago, which can be seen as an intermediary step. Major change: dissertation instead of engineering project.

Tempus Project SCM-C015A05-SCG - Pilot Implementation of ECTS - September 13, 2006, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Portugal Courses on Electrical and Computer Engineering: Two cycles in a row Quality control: ECTS component In order to support the proposal, former students validated the ECTS effort associated with the different courses through questionnaires. Those results allow us to detect deviations from reference curriculum. We strongly support continuity of those questionnaires.

Tempus Project SCM-C015A05-SCG - Pilot Implementation of ECTS - September 13, 2006, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Portugal Courses on Electrical and Computer Engineering: Two cycles in a row In summary Our approach based on Integrated MSc supports increase flexibility for student’s progression. Still supports mobility and retain broad spectrum skills supporting flexibility and life-long learning capabilities.
