5 4 th of July  Independence Day is commonly associated with:  Fireworks  Parades  Barbecues (BBQs)  Carnivals  Picnics  Concerts  Baseball games  Political speeches and ceremonies

6 4 th of July is the U.S.’ National Day  Celebrated since 1777  Marks the anniversary of when the Declaration of Independence was signed  It is the anniversary of the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, which won the U.S. its freedom

16 Notes: American Revolution  Declaration of Independence: A document written by Thomas Jefferson stating that the United States thought of itself as its own nation, while it fought for independence from Britain.  Stamp Act: (1765) A law requiring that people pay for to add a stamp to every piece of paper. This was a way for Britain to tax the colonies. The colonists thought this was “taxation without representation.”

17 Notes: American Revolution  Boston Tea Party: A political protest in 1773 in which patriots shoved boxes of tea in the harbor to show that they were against the Tea Act, which taxed colonists’ tea.  Intolerable Acts: Laws given by the British government to colonists in response to the tea party to show that Britain was still in control (though they soon lost that control.)

18 Notes: American Revolution  Common Sense: A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine which explained to people why they should be free from Britain and sold 2.5 million copies.

22 Objective and Overview  We will be able to… 1. Compare and contrast the Declaration of Independence and the pamphlet called Common Sense. 2. Practice the writing process. 3. Explain connections between American historical events and the 5 American Ideals. 4. Prepare for our exam.

23 Essay Prompt  We have recently read about the Declaration of Independence and the pamphlet Common Sense. In at least 3 paragraphs, compare and contrast the Declaration of Independence with Common Sense. Remember to explain how they are the same and how they are different.

24 Writing Process  In history class, writing is about ideas and organization of your thoughts.  When we write essays, they are formal, and should not use the word “I.” 1. Start by understanding the question. 1. Underline and circle important parts 2. Then, pre-write: “brain-storm” answers 3. Draft a response 4. Revise your work 5. Edit your draft 6. Write the final copy
