3 Do Now: Journal Entry What are routines? What routines have you established in your classroom? What are the benefits of maintaining strong routines in your class? (3-5 sentences in your notes. 5 minutes)

4 Why Establish Routines? The Philosophy of the Practice Creates orderly structure Provides predictability Consistency and organization promote healthier minds to receive information Helps you facilitate and orchestrate instruction

6 Personal Examples Do Now o In journals, absolutely silent, no questions, five minutes o Teacher checks attendance and checks in individually with students o Music cue: classical (calming, focused, silent) Exit Ticket o Everything off desk, worth points, type of assessment o Hand raised, push in chair, exit quietly o Music cue: “Final Countdown” (signals five min remaining) Parking Lot o Avoids off-task questions o Personal issues resolved o Students feel heard

7 Hand Signals: Communication without Disruption Ever have ask a great question then the one student with his/her hand raised asks to go to the restroom? Restroom Tissue Pass out of class (Dean, Nurse, Teacher) I agree with so-and-so…/ I understand Speak louder Please take a seat “Posture Check”

8 Applying Routines: How-to Guide Begin Day 1 Explicitly state WHY the routine is necessary Physically MODEL for students Post reminder posters around classroom Reinforce Daily CONSISTENCY Gentle corrections Ex: “Oh I really loved that answer, but I didn´t see it with a hand. Want to try again?”

9 Practice and Share: Groups of 4 Which routines do you need to implement? How will you explain them to your students? Model to your group the hand signals you wish to begin teaching
