8.1.1 → Sample sizes Using the image below, answer the following questions Which Mario has more information? B Which Mario has larger sample sizes (pixels)? A Which Mario has a better quality? Why? B, Because he has more information even though he has smaller pixels.
5
Paragraph Example The image that has the better quality is the image B. This image is better because it has MORE pixels which gives more information. Even though it has MORE pixels it has SMALLER pixels which shows that larger isn’t always better. Overall, this shows that we want SMALLER pixels because that provides us with MORE information which gives us a image with a better quality.
6
8.1.1 → Sample sizes Using the image below, answer the following questions Which, analog or digital, creates a more reliable sound? Digital Which type of wave contains more information? Paragraph Answer Digital creates a more reliable sound because it has more information (small sample sizes) The additional information creates a higher quality and more reliable sound.
7
8.1.2 → Digital versus Analog
Sent as a continuous wave X Sent as wave pulses Sent as binary code (1’s and 0’s) Used in an old record player when a needle follows the groove Preserves the original shape of the sound wave
8
8.1.2 → Digital versus Analog
Holds more information X Transfers information easier and faster Easily distorted when components wear down Media can break and become outdated Distortion occurs when waves travel through a medium or over long distances
9
Digital versus Analog Paragraph
Digital waves take the continuous wave of Analog and convert them into binary code (1’s and 0’s). While there is some debate, digital is more reliable because it holds more information and transfers information faster. It is also more reliable because sound can only break down if the actual media components break and the media components dont wear down over time. Unlike analog, digital can also be transmitted longer distances without being distorted
10
8.1.3 → Labeling a Wave
11
8.1.3 → Labeling a Wave
12
8.1.3 → Labeling a Wave Describe the amplitude and energy of wave A.
Low amplitude and Low energy Describe the amplitude and energy of wave B. High amplitude and high energy How are amplitude and energy related? Normally an increase in amplitude results in an increase in energy
13
Create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting sound and light waves
Create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting sound and light waves. Make sure you have at least 2 similarities and at least 3 differences
14
Guiding Questions Which is more reliable, smaller samples of information or larger samples of information? Why? Smaller samples of information are more reliable because they allow the sound/image to have more information. It is better to have additional samples that are smaller than less samples that are larger. The additional information allows the sound/image to be at a higher quality.
15
Guiding Questions Which is more reliable, digitized signals or analog signals, why? Digital waves take the continuous wave of Analog and convert them into binary code (1’s and 0’s). While there is some debate, digital is more reliable because it holds more information and transfers information faster. It is also more reliable because sound can only break down if the actual media components break and the media components dont wear down over time. Unlike analog, digital can also be transmitted longer distances without being distorted
16
Guiding Questions Define crest, trough, and wavelength of a wave.
Crest = Top of the Wave Trough = Bottom of the Wave Wavelength = Distance from crest to crest OR trough to trough
17
Guiding Questions How is the amplitude of a wave related to its energy? An increased amplitude normally results in an increased energy.

Analog and Digital Article
Wave-based information was, for many years, received, stored, and produced by analog media, such as vinyl records, analog film, analog broadcast TV, and analog phones. Analog technologies are characterized by their preservation of wave forms. For example, vinyl records are pressed with grooves. When the needle of the record player moves, along these grooves, it transfers the shape of the grooves into electrical signals. Then the signals are transformed into sound waves by speakers.

Analog and Digital Article
Analog phones transform sound wave energy into electrical energy using an electromagnet. The electrical signals are transmitted along copper wire to the destination phone. The destination phone’s earpiece then converts the electrical signal back to sound waves using a speaker. The fact that analog signals preserve the original shape of the sound waves is sometimes considered an advantage. However, analog signals tend to become distorted over long distances. This is because of the properties of waves, such as their frequency and amplitude, change when they interact with matter. In addition, the media used in analog devices, such as records and speaker heads, cause distortion when their components begin to wear out.

Analog and Digital Article
Digital communication is a binary code- it is like an alphabet with only two letters. It uses 0s and 1s to represent information. Digital converters change the information in waves to binary code by sampling, or collecting information from, parts of the wave. Then the converter encodes those bits of information about the wave if not a binary code file. The binary code file can be converted back to a sound wave by a digital appliance that reads, interprets, and translates the code, such as a CD player connected to a speaker.

Analog and Digital Article
Digitizing information has a several advantages. Binary code is easily transmitted electronically along wires or stored on and read CDs or DVDs with pulses of light. Binary code can also be sent through the air using radio waves. Computer chips electronically store large quantities of binary data using capacitors. A digital file itself never becomes distorted over time or distance, though the media data are stored on, such as CDs or flash drives, can break or become outdated. Compared to analog methods, digitized signals are faster and more reliable way of sending information over long distances.
