Driverless car, Google Glass and Solve for X. −Carmakers need to think big like Google has. −Car companies have survived the Great Recession; Now they think they can safely return to their old way of doing business – thinking small. Conservative leadership. Small incremental changes in business structures.

2 Case Study: Carmakers Must Take a New Road −Google is a serious diagonal competitor to the car companies. −In the case that the driverless car succeeds, Google can provide an operating system for autos, regardless of the manufacturer. −Major car makers hold the advantage over Google. Expertise, resources, networks and brands. −Car makers must find creative ways to tap into these resources and overhaul their ideology of slow change.

3 Case Study: Carmakers Must Take a New Road −Six technology megatrends: Mobile devices, social media, cameras, sensors, cloud computing and emergent knowledge. −Car manufacturers start thinking of doomsday scenarios. Cars sit unused 95 percent of time. Usage costs could decrease dramatically if driverless technology was adopted. Such commodity cars would erode product margins and undercut current business models. −Companies could also reconceive cars as a platform. This would allow a great diversity of applications provided by third parties.
