Format MUST include the following: Unit Goals: They must be measurable, age appropriate, and connected to your unit theme Lesson Objectives for Each Lesson: Do they directly relate to your unit goals? They, too, must be measurable, age appropriate, and connected to your unit theme. Materials list: What does each child need for this lesson? What do YOU need for this lesson? Procedure: You will need sufficient detail in your procedure so that a substitute could easily teach your lesson. Evaluation/assessment: I will look particularly for how you are assessing your lesson objectives. You must also think about how you will assess the “Big Idea” associated with the unit goal(s) of your unit. Resource bibliography Rationale: A brief explanation of how this lesson and its objectives are important for students. This should include characteristics of meaningful and powerful Social Studies.

Procedure Varies according to the method being used. –Direct Instruction Lecture Guided Practice –Indirect Instruction Simulation Guided Discovery?
5
Anticipatory Set/Exploratory Activity Engages Prior Knowledge Can be used with Direct or Indirect Instruction. Focuses the lesson
6
Procedure Should be written out so a substitute teacher could understand what to do. Include what students should be doing as well. Lots of ways to format this: –I do, We do, You do –Intro, Body, Conclusion –Learning Cycle
7
Regardless of “Format” of Procedure… This is what effective lesson plans look like: –Engaging Prior Knowledge –Constructing Meaning –High Level of Engagement –Higher Order Thinking –Multiple Learning Modalities –Using Multiple Intelligences –Giving students an “experience” with the skill, content, objectives, etc.
8
Teaching to Multiple Intelligences using Multiple Modalities 3 column notes with playdough Latin Dancing –Method Sheet

Evaluation Unit Goals- will be evaluated with performance assessment at the end of unit. Lesson Objectives- should be evaluated through –Informal: Questions, Ticket out the door, group discussion, class discussion. –Formal: Homework, in-class products created –*****These are your FORMATIVE tools of assessment to guide further instruction. »Is there something you need to spend more time on? »Are students ready for the next step? » Is this challenging enough for the students?
