ATF Instrumentation Status and Planning 3 December 2007 Juan Cruz, Justin May, Doug McCormick, Janice Nelson, Tonee Smith, John Wray

3 December 2007 2 Projects Overview ATF DR BPM ATF2 Magnet Movers and BPMs IP Carbon Wire Scanner OTR Fiber Loss Monitor Bottom line: –Work progresses apace. –Doug & Justin are in Japan now. Tonee leaves tomorrow. –Lots of ambitious plans for this trip –Lots to do to be ready for ATF2 first beam Fall 2008. Need to go in April/May 2008 to finish hardware prep.

3 December 2007 3 ATF DR BPM Upgrade Purpose: –63 high-resolution (<300 nm) DR BPM readout –63 BPMs capable of turn-by-turn diagnostics Have 4 working prototype downmix boards. Tested 2 with the FNAL cal boards last month. –Bringing 2 boards for test BPM, 2 as spares Plans for December trip: –Test prototype and new software with small test crate, independent of existing 20 ET BPMs –Demonstrate successful BPM calibration 1 dB attenuator test BBA early in trip, BBA later – check with and without calibration Swap downmix electronics and verify that calibration corrects for electronics variations.

3 December 2007 4 ATF DR BPM Upgrade Plans pre-May –Fabricate 63 (96) + spares downmix boards –Ship them, DC power distribution system & VME controllers to KEK. Plans for April/May trip: –Install the all the hardware Large effort with more FNAL involvement –Commission system Hardware, software, calibration, BBA, TBT –Goal is to test “complete” system with beam before summer shutdown 2008.

3 December 2007 6 ATF2 Magnet Mover Purpose: –Sub-micron magnet positioning allowing for beam- based magnet alignment and QBPM calibration By end of the year: –Finish mover code and test trims to < 1 m By end of Spring 08: –Install cable plant and equipment in racks. Zero cam pots and test mover operation. –Get EPICS system to work By Fall 08 –Get the EPICS/VSystem handshake sorted out to be ready for first beam.

3 December 2007 7 ATF2 Magnet Movers Confusion Unfortunately, we still don’t have enough movers in Japan for ATF2. Original ATF2 design called for 27 magnet movers –This number seems to have increased, but we don’t have a new definitive number. 29 movers + 1 prototype were salvaged from FFTB –25 are now in Japan, one of which needs new bearings –1 is at SLAC for testing –4 are in France There are 3 more, but these are committed to the ESA program and then to SABER It is unknown at this time where the missing movers for Japan are coming from – do we ship our test stand &/or ship those in France?
8
3 December 2007 8 ATF2 QBPMs Purpose: –Cavity BPMs capable of first-pulse operation (quadrant readout) and normal readout after calibration. Status still the same: –Purchasing cables and parts for spare RF boards with plans to ship to KEK early 2008. December ’07 - first-pulse operation preparation –Re-check phasing of LO cables –Repeat sign (phase) calibration tests Spring 2008 –Install cable plant and equipment in racks
9
3 December 2007 9 IP Carbon Wire Scanner Purpose: –Combine two FFTB scanners into single IP carbon wire scanner for ATF2 that allows scanning of both large and small beams at the IP. Fabrication and re-work on-going –New vacuum chamber designed and ordered. Will assemble after it arrives –Clive will have Yung-Yung make the wire cards Should ship early 2008 Plans for April/May trip –Install scanner and cable plant for Joerger control via magnet mover camac crate Doug and Terunuma will discuss in December who will write the scanning software –Work required to interface SLAC scanner with ATF software
10
3 December 2007 10 OTR Purpose: –Examine beam spot after septum to look for emittance blow-up (DR to EXT) Plans for December –Modify lens optics to clear lead shielding and install –Pull stepper motor cables back to the septum location –Pull pneumatic cylinder control cable to septum location –Test controls & camera focus –Beam studies with septum
11
3 December 2007 11 Fiber Loss Monitor Purpose: –Inexpensive, easy to use beam line loss monitor to look for losses around extraction septum –System in place for ATF2 Plans for December –Install fiber from upstream of the septum to the end of the extraction line –Connect PMT to scope in the eel’s bedroom ( 鰻の寝床 ) for control room monitoring –Check losses when steering around the septum.
12
3 December 2007 12 Summary DR BPM Upgrade –Test redesigned analog downmix electronics, calibration, and system control interface now –Plans for fully commissioned system before summer shutdown 2008 ATF2 Movers –Magnet mover control tests happening now –Installation to happen in April/May 2008 –MORE MOVERS NEED TO BE SHIPPED ATF2 QBPMs –Tests now of sign & phasing –Gathering parts to ship in early 2008 for hardware installation in April/May.
13
3 December 2007 13 Summary IP Carbon Wire Scanner –Fabrication & rework ongoing –Ship to ATF in early 2008 for installation in April/May –Software responsibility yet to be decided OTR –Parts ready for installation and use now. Fiber Loss Monitor –Install fiber in extraction line this trip to look for losses around the extraction septum. –Leave pieces in place for use in ATF2.
