AKM HABIBUR RAHMAN CEO, BdREN 1 MeetBdREN 2015 15-16 March 2015 Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban: University of Dhaka

Birth of BdREN 2 Bandwidth Number of Universities >100 Mbps 1 50 ~ 100 Mps 5 30 ~ 49 Mbps 6 10 ~ 29 Mbps 14 <10 Mbps 8 Total34  Number of Universities with current bandwidth  University Web Page Hosting o Hosted in own servers:8 o Hosted in Other Government Organizations/Local ISPs:6 o Hosted in Servers Outside Bangladesh: 20  The situation was worse during conceptualizing stage of HEQEP before 2009 Data collected: August 2014

BdREN Born  A component of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP)  Designed as a high performance single umbrella network Connect Universities and Research institutions Connectivity to Global Research and Education Networks (RENs) and Commercial internet. 3

Backbone of BdREN  Designed on PGCB OPGW Network running over high voltage transmission line.  Leased one pair of optical fiber from PGCB on IRU basis for 20 years (Since 2011). 4

PGCB Grid Towers 5

Why BdREN Backbone on PGCB Fiber?  Main target to reach public universities and create facilities for connecting private universities  Searching for a single service provider covering the targeted Institutions  No better option at all wrt to availability of PGCB PoP at the nearest location to University  So ultimate choice was PGCB fiber. 6

BdREN Pilot Network on PGCB Fiber 7

PILOT Network-International Connectivity UGC Routers BSCCLTEINBTCLUser Institutions (DU, BUET, SBAU, JU, BSMMU, NSU, UGC) 8 Internet Regional E&R Network

BdREN Connectivity to TEIN 9

Overview on Full Network  Point to Point Fiber Connectivity 34 Public Universities, 2 International Universities and 1 Private University Installing Dedicated Optical Fiber to each University from the backbone Total 325 Km Fiber Lay 44 Links (PGCB-PGCB, University- University & University-PGCB) 10

BdREN Full Fiber Connectivity 11

Overview on Full Network Network…  Network Equipment Transmission equipment to create backbone network Internet PoPs at all Public Universities (34) and 1 Private University  Data Center (DC and DR) Sub-System DC at UGC and DR at BUET Storage Area Network with 300 Tera Byte Capacity Dual Path Fiber connectivity between DC and DR  Video Conference Sub-System with Virtual Class Room 32 Public Universities  Full Network is expected to be completed within 2015 12

Present Status of BdREN  Fiber Laying Optical Fiber Cable Laying Completed 39 links (Total Length = 283.3 Km) Cable Laying going on 3 Links (Total Length = 15.5 Km) Pending – 2 Links  Network Equipment Installation All Virtual Class Room completed and Equipments installed at Sites within Dhaka Equipment installation ongoing at Main Data Center after renovation; Renovation work at DR Center is ongoing. Installation of Passive Network (Renovation/Petty Works for BdREN Internet PoP room at universities, Grounding, Power cabling etc) completed. Equipment/goods cleared from ports and waiting for delivery to the sites. Delivery is delaying due to security reasons.

Future Plan (Third Phase)  Infrastructure at Medical Colleges and Research Institutes Last mile connectivity Internet PoPs and Virtual class room  BdREN Application Development  Establish collaboration with other NRENs  Awareness Building and Knowledge Exchange  Strengthening BdREN connectivity  Direct Connectivity to Tier-1 International ISP

BdREN International Partners  A consortium of Kent State University, USA Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet), USA Ireland's National Education and Research Network (HEAnet)  Scope of Services All kinds of technical support Capacity development of BdREN operational manpower Help BdREN team during Operational Acceptance Test of the system Establish collaboration with other NRENs Help BdREN to develop its strategic plan.

BdREN Planned Manpower 10xTechnicians Outsourced Service: MLSS, Cleaning and Security 2xTST Consultant

BdREN Governance  BdREN to be run by a Trust Organization on not-for-profit basis  Operation and Maintenance Responsibility to BdREN Trust  11-member Trustee Board headed by UGC Chairman, Trustees mainly from Universities.

Thank You. 22
