6 © Vicki C. Bernard Music has a plan or form We recognize the form of a tree. It has leaves, branches, a trunk. Music has a form including notes, melody, harmony and rhythm.

7 © Vicki C. Bernard Sounds Sounds are invisible waves moving through air in waves, just as water moves in waves.

8 © Vicki C. Bernard –Notes are the sounds that we hear. –Notes have a specific pitch and length. Some are long and some are short. –Notes on the music are symbols of the sounds they represent.

9 © Vicki C. Bernard M A line of notes put together one after the other is a melody The notes are the part of the music that catches you ear as you listen. Melody

10 © Vicki C. Bernard The notes of the melody may go up, down or be repeated. Interesting melodies have notes that move up or down more than they repeat. Good melodies are easy to remember.

11 © Vicki C. Bernard Melodies may be simple This is a familiar melody, it is easy to sing and remember.

12 © Vicki C. Bernard Melodies may be complicated The “Star Spangled Banner” has a complicated melody. It is more difficult to learn.

13 © Vicki C. Bernard Harmony Harmony happens when two or more notes are heard at the same time. The harmony supports the melody. Harmony helps create a feeling or mood.

14 © Vicki C. Bernard Rhythm The rhythm is the pattern of the length of the notes. Rhythm may have a fast,moderate or slow speed. The rhythm helps the harmony create the mood of the music.

15 © Vicki C. Bernard Rhythm Rhythm means musical time. It comes from a Greek word that means flow.

16 © Vicki C. Bernard The composer plans how they will use the notes melody harmony rhythm to create a certain kind of song. They create something beautiful that they can share with others.
