1 Food and the Planet LO: To illustrate, using food, the effect that our lifestyles have on the planet. Outcomes All will be able to use the terms food miles and be able to explain how it links us to other countries Most will be able to describe a good and a bad effect of transporting food around the world Some will be able to suggest summarise the effects of importing food and give their own opinion on the subject.

2 Where do we get our fruit and veg from? Using the food cards, list the countries we import our food from. Once you have done that use P.102 of the atlas to find and shade/number them. You should find at least 10 countries.

3 Food and the Planet 1. Describe the distribution of the countries we import fruit and veg from. Are they all near us? Are they all in a similar area? Is there a pattern?

4 Food Miles … … the distance food travels to get to our homes.

5 How much of our food comes from abroad? Experts say we should reduce the amount of food we import even further. Why do you think this is?

6 Its cheaper People want to eat out-of-season food all year round. Some foods can’t be grown in the UK Improved technology makes the transport easy Supermarkets want bigger profits Why do we buy such well travelled food? Is the global food trade a good thing?

8 How can we reduce food miles? Buy more British food Buy more local food Grow your own vegetables / fruit Use local shops rather than travelling to bigger supermarkets. Buy food in less packaging

9 Homework Imagine you have just bought a chicken salad. Create a poster that shows the effect you eating a chicken salad has on the planet. Consider the different ingredients, where they come from, how they are transported to you, the energy used to cook the chicken etc. Due next lesson

10 Plenary You have 100 characters to write a text message to your friend to tell them what you have learnt about food miles this lesson. Hi, have you heard about....
