What was John Whitmer called to do? President Spencer W. Kimball counseled: "I urge all of the people of this church to give serious attention to their family histories, to encourage their parents and grandparents to write their journals, and let no family go into eternity without having left their memoirs for their children, their grandchildren, and their posterity. This is a duty and a responsibility" (in Conference Report, Apr. 1978, 4; or Ensign, May 1978, 4).  Why do you think personal and family histories matter?  Who has a testimony of keeping a personal or family history?  Doctrine and Covenants 47:4: What did the Lord promise? "Those who keep a book of remembrance are more likely to keep the Lord in remembrance in their daily lives. Journals are a way of counting our blessings and of leaving an inventory of these blessings" (in Conference Report, Apr. 1978, 117; or Ensign, May 1978, 77).

Imagine that the Saints in Smithfield have lost their homes because of a natural disaster. The Stake President has asked your bishop to arrange for members of your ward to house some of the displaced families for several months – and you are on the list.  What questions and concerns would you have?  What concerns and feelings do you think those moving into your house would have?  What council does the Lord give in D&C 48 about a similar situation?

Section heading: Mark five beliefs of the Shakers.  The Second Coming had already occurred.  Christ had returned in the form of a woman named Ann Lee.  Baptism was not essential.  People should not eat meat.  A celibate life was higher than marriage. D&C 49: Mark five true beliefs (doctrines).  The Second Coming is "nigh at hand" (v. 6-7).  Jesus will not come in the form of a woman (see v. 22).  The Lord commands us to be baptized (see vv. 13–14).  Whoever forbids to eat meat is not of God (see vv. 18–19).  Whoever forbids to marry is not of God (see vv. 15–16).

Look at verse 2: What do you think it means to “desire to know the truth in part, but not all”? Which of these 5 doctrines is most applicable today?  The Second Coming  Jesus will not come in the form of a woman  Baptism  Vegetarianism  Marriage is ordained of God

President Gordon B. Hinckley extolled marriage between a man and a woman: “How wonderful a thing is marriage under the plan of our Eternal Father, a plan provided in His divine wisdom for the happiness and security of His children and the continuity of the race. … “President Joseph F. Smith once declared ‘that no man can be saved and exalted in the kingdom of God without the woman, and no woman can reach perfection and exaltation in the kingdom of God, alone. … God instituted marriage in the beginning. He made man in His own image and likeness, male and female, and in their creation it was designed that they should be united together in sacred bonds of marriage, and one is not perfect without the other.’ (In Conference Report, April 1913, p. 118.)

“The Church has a single, undeviating standard of sexual morality: intimate relations are proper only between a husband and a wife united in the bonds of matrimony. “The Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage neither constitutes nor condones any kind of hostility towards homosexual men and women. Protecting marriage between a man and a woman does not affect Church members’ Christian obligations of love, kindness and humanity toward all people. … We can express genuine love and friendship for a homosexual family member or friend without accepting the practice of homosexuality or any re- definition of marriage” (“The Divine Institution of Marriage,” mormonnewsroom.org).
