COWRY SHELLS Cowry shells were first used as money in China about 1200 B.C.

COINS The first coins were made in Lydia, in present day Turkey, in the 7th century B.C. and soon spread all over the Mediterranean countries.

PAPER MONEY Paper money was invented in the 11th century by the Mongolian Emperor, Kubla Khan, in China. But banknotes only appeared in Europe in 1661.
