REINFORCEMENT Something that follows a response & strengthens the tendency to repeat the response

PRIMARY REINFORCEMENT Something necessary for psychological or physical survival that is used as a reward. Examples:

SECONDARY REINFORCEMENT Anything that comes to represent a primary reinforcer. Examples:

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT Strengthening the tendency to repeat a response by following it with the addition of something pleasant. Examples:

NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT Strengthening a response by following it with the removal of something unpleasant Examples:

PUNISHMENT Weakening a response by following it with an unpleasant consequence Examples:

SHAPING The process of gradually refining a response by reinforcing close approximations of it.

IMMEDIACY OF REINFORCEMENT The reinforcement must occur without delay or risk loss of repeat behavior.
