Developing skills and techniques

Learning objectives… Understand the different ways of learning a new skill. Understand the positive and negative aspects of each learning style. Give examples of them in a practical situation.

Task 1… Using the equipment/teaching aids…. Learn to juggle

Developing skills and techniques There are various definitions of learning but the predominant view is that experience gives us knowledge, which in turn influences the way we behave. Most skills that are used in sports and physical activities (as part of a healthy, active lifestyle) are learned in a variety of different ways. Practice/rehearsal Copying others Trial & Error Appropriate Role Models

Practice / rehearsal When learning motor skills for physical activities we often practice and repeat drills that encourage movements to become almost automatic. The responses of the learner become conditioned/autonomous when associated with a particular stimulus.

Task 2… Discuss the following statement….. ‘Practice makes perfect’ Is this accurate??

Copying Often called ‘ Observational learning’. Learning takes place through the observation and copying. The person whose behaviour is being observed is called the role model and observational learning is often referred to as modeling.

Task 3… Discuss the positive and negative aspects of this type of learning. Is this always a good technique to use? Why could it be good? Why could it be bad?

Trial & Error Often called ‘Operant Conditioning’. It involves the shaping of behaviour through the use of reinforcement. If a reward is given when certain behaviour takes place then learning is much faster.

Task 4… Discuss the positive and negative aspects of this type of learning. Is this always a good technique to use? Why could it be good? Why could it be bad?

Appropriate Role Models Selecting an appropriate role model to link to all the previous learning styles. What are the possible problems with this theory??

Homework… Log onto the yacapaca website and complete the multiple choice quiz. To be completed by next theory lesson.

Plenary…. The 4 types of learning are – Practice/rehearsal Copying others Trial & Error Appropriate Role Models
