Routes into Languages SW Encouraging Creativity: Pop Video and MFL Speaking Competitions

The MFL Speaking Competition Presentation in a foreign language (5 languages in 2012 – French, German, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin) Encouraged to be creative / dramatic – it is a presentation, not a rehearsed speech 3 age groups (KS3, KS4 & KS5) Non-native and near-native categories

The MFL Speaking Competition Topic appropriate to level (e.g. KS5 - ‘My Dream’) Free to interpret the topic however they like – fact, fiction, allegorical Clear criteria sent to schools in advance Presentation and language equally weighted Panel of judges to cover all languages

The MFL Speaking Competition Each school can enter 2 students per language per level Internal competitions held in schools Sub-regional finals held across the region – Swindon, Bath and Barnstaple Cups and certificates awarded to winners Regional final held in Exeter with cash prizes

“I have taken a couple of pupils from my school to not only the regional finals in Bath but also the South West Finals at Exeter University last week as part of the work of Routes into Languages SW. My pupils really enjoyed it and did well and are keen to keep going. They were asking me whether there are any National Finals to enter, given that they won the South West Finals. Pop Video Competition Entries in two age groups: 11-14, 15-18 Song or rap in a foreign language Own music or karaoke All entries put on Routes SW YouTube site Judged on overall presentation – music, words, filming, fun

Pop Video Competition Winner and runners up in each category decided by panel of judges Surveymonkey used to allow online viewers to vote for their favourite song to receive the ‘Online Viewers Award’ Cash prizes and trophies presented at ‘Oscars style’ regional final 23,632 online views on RiL SW YouTube site!

So what are the benefits? Motivational Multi-disciplinary Language for a purpose Communicating something which matters Transferable skills – presentation, confidence, IT, etc. FUN!
