1 Word Splash Use the following words in a paragraph. Do the best that you can. (no books) * grid system * map key * map title * inset map * locator * map scale * compass rose * cardinal directions * intermediate directions

2 Word Splash Example I picked up the map and read the map title. It said Animals Galore Zoo. I noticed that the map used a grid system. I looked at the map key to find the symbol for the polar bears. I wanted to see them first. I was not sure what direction I should go so I looked at the compass rose. I used the map scale to figure out the distance between where I was and the bear exhibit. When I got to the bear exhibit, I saw a map that had a locator on it. It showed me all the places in the world that I could find the polar bear.

The features or parts of a map include: grid system, map title, map key, cardinal directions, map scale, inset map, intermediate directions, compass rose, and locator. It is necessary to be able to read a map so that you can determine the location of places you want to go. For example: if I want to ride the Great Bear at Hershey Park, I can look at the map and see how to get there. A map can also help you find out how close places are to you. It can help you if you get lost.
